Raphael J. Witorsch, Ph.D.
Raphael J. (Ray) Witorsch is Professor Emeritus of Physiology, School of Medicine, Medical College of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), Richmond, Virginia. He has had considerable experience in advising clients as to whether associations between xenobiotic exposures and adverse health effects were causally related. Since 1984, Dr. Witorsch has served as a consultant on the health effects of a variety of chemical exposures, including endocrine disruptors, trichloroethylene, polychlorobiphenyls (PCBs), dioxins, ethylene oxide, formaldehyde, alcohol, Red Dye No. 3, silicones (breast implants), oral contraceptives, arsenic based wood preservatives, statins, anabolic steroids, and steroids in utero. Dr. Witorsch has provided critical analyses of published studies and expert witness testimony, presented position papers at public hearings (such as those of the FDA, U.S. EPA, California EPA, and OSHA), and testified as an expert at depositions and trials for both defendants and plaintiffs. Dr. Witorsch's goal is to provide clients with sound advice, insight, and testimony as to the validity of putative causal relationships, using an objective approach to the science and statistics involved.
Dr. Witorsch has conducted original research in endocrinology, physiology, pathophysiology, and toxicology that has been supported by grants and contracts from numerous agencies and foundations, including the National Cancer Institute. His current research pertains to the study of toxic agents in vitro (cell culture). Dr. Witorsch has trained and supported the research of several M.S. and Ph.D. students and post-doctoral fellows. In addition to authoring numerous peer-reviewed research papers, review articles, and book chapters, Dr. Witorsch co-authored the textbook Review of Endocrinology And Reproduction (Renaissance Press, 1986) and was editor of Reproductive Toxicology, Second Edition (Target Organ Toxicology Series, Raven Press, 1995). Throughout his academic career, Dr. Witorsch has received several awards in recognition of his medical and graduate teaching. Most recently he received the 2009 VCU School of Medicine Faculty Teaching Excellence Award, the School's highest honor for outstanding teaching. Dr. Witorsch serves or has served on the editorial boards of several research journals. His elected society memberships include The Endocrine Society, the American Physiological Society, the Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine, the International Society of Regulatory Toxicology and Pharmacology, and the Society of Toxicology.
